Providence, RI is closest at about 40 minutes away. We would not recommend Boston, because, although it is about 1h20 from Newport, we have learned they are apparently closing down a main artery next summer for two months and may make travel in and out of the city very difficult with potential heavy traffic delays. There is a direct flight from Fort Lauderdale to Providence on JetBlue.
